According to Migraine.com, more than 37 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, with some 3 million or so having migraines as a chronic condition. Typically, people who get migraines experience them at least once a month and they’re so bad that they cause moderate to severe disability. Migraines are like headaches on steroids. They feel like there’s a war going on in your head and it’s a war you want no part of, at all! Who are the people most likely to get migraines? White women between the ages of 35 and 55 from lower income groups are more likely to get them. Those with migraines often miss work or skip social activities with friends and family because the pain is so debilitating.

Have you ever had a migraine or know someone who has? They can be triggered by a number of factors, including heat and humidity, menstruation, pregnancy and/or menopause. Doctors recommend people make a diary for themselves indicating the conditions surrounding the times they get migraines, including what foods are eaten, local weather conditions, and whether or not they’re going through certain situations such as pregnancy. The more informed a doctor is, the better they can help a patient deal with their problem.

Symptoms of migraines include a throbbing, pulsating pain, along with light/sound sensitivity, nausea, pain on one side, vision changes and even vomiting.

Chiropractic care can help bring migraine sufferers some much needed relief. A 1999 study of 127 migraine sufferers in Australia found that those receiving chiropractic treatment had fewer attacks and needed to take less medication. The study also found that more than 80 percent of the patients blamed stress for their migraine attacks. Researchers believe chiropractic care physically helps reduce the body’s reaction to stress. Another study showed 22 percent of people who had chiropractic treatment saw the number of migraine attacks drop 90 percent. In that same study, 49 percent said they had a significant reduction in pain intensity.
